Ace..Place command..Notice in the middle of the session I pump him up with a cue word..He hops off thinking we're all finished..This is the sign of a dog you must be very animated with to succeed..You do not wash a dog like this out you just train smart to make him successful..Watch at the end how he comes alive!!! I have to try to get that spunk in the drills which takes a lot of time and patience to show him it is not all bad..

Today I am trying to get Roux more comfortable on the dog stand. I have a feeling all his FF was done on or much was. He takes the stand as bad lace to be and is very leary of getting on it. If you are accustomed to duck hunting in north Texas public water with your dog and hunt in timber or really anyplace standing in water you need a dog stand. As you can see he loves birds but he has a misguided attitude to the least amount of pressure ( Voice, E collar etc.). He can do the work nicely but has to totally see the light at end of tunnel. Many doges are like this pup you have to become a team and pup needs to trust in the training. Here is a page describing this

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

dead timber north texas duck hunt

North Texas Dog Trainers trains for the real world of hunting. Heavy cover land and water is stressed. North Texas duck hunting can be marsh, dead timber, green timber and mud flats. All these areas can confuse a young pup if not introduced before the hunt. Multiple gunners in training must be used to have the young pup ready for many gunners. The pup can be frightened if this is not shown this before hand as in this clip.
Beau with his first duck hunt

North Texas Dog Trainers stresses the real deal. This adds up to building a retriever that has no surprises in the field. A typical north Texas duck hunting trip can be in anything  from dead timber to deep mud flats. The pup must be prepared to deal with this. Just because you have a hard charging pup does not mean they are up to the intro on a first hunt. Many retrieves in deep mud should be made so they can learn how not to expend all their energy as this clip shows duke retrieving a bird in very deep mud. The cover and mud in this clip show how he is learning to walk in deep mud. A young pup needs to see many different areas like this 4 month old pup in this picture.

Please realize there is many ways to train a pup. You ask 20 trainers and I can guarantee you will hear 20 different answers.. So please do not say this or that is wrong , it’s just what has worked over the years for me and for MANY pups
Training a new puppy is something some of us just see as another day in paradise. Others see the new day as in puppy hell. You need to be prepared to see this new family member as one who wants to take over the asylum and make you there pet. Either by being a total wild little dingo. Chewing, digging, cat & mouse games or worse the sneak attack by manipulation of the hart.
The basics…
If you keep the pup on a short leash so to speak from day one your ahead of the game. Don’t get me wrong you need to let pup be a pup. You just don’t let them run rampant. A pup will learn FAST what there owners personality flaws are and zero in on them. Pup thinks, if you give into me peeing on the floor surly I can poop at will also. When I bark in my create for three minutes I know you will come in and take me to MY new king size bed. So of course I can eat or destroy anything in MY new bedroom. After all I own it and you now. If you see a domino effect growing here your right. Everything a pup does is connected in there little brain to other deviate actions. Pup learns very fast that they now hold the keys to this portal to puppy hell and drain every ounce of discipline out of this weak pet YOU have become.
Control
Control is the key to keep the pup your little pet. You tell them when and where to eat, sleep, poop, pee and when to play or when to sleep. From day one you need to be the top dog.
Sit…This one small word is the cornerstone of a well behaved pup till the day they pass on . Pup cannot eat, leave there create go out the door to play or jump in the car or truck before they earn the privilege to do so.
You will be amazed at the pups attitude. They will fight this control for days but when they give in they enjoy the WORK and the new game.
To start this at such an early age say six weeks you must remember that this is NOT formal training just the first piece in a LARGE puzzle. When a pup is to eat hold them with your hands on the floor, say sit push the back end down and then after a short count of say five let them go on there name to eat. DO NOT EXPECT THE PUP TO JUST SIT THERE. Yes you will have a barrel of monkeys in your hands but it will get better with time as long as your consistent and do NOT give in because you do not have time. If this is to hard you might as well give it up. A CHILD CAN DO THIS…As pup becomes accustomed to this your finger holding under the collar and a push on the butt will keep the pup seated.
When pup is older notice I do not put pup ages now on this anymore. This is because ALL pups are different in learning curves. You can not compare any pup to dogs of the past or Joe Blows pup. If you do your in for a big let down. I am horrible at math my brother can do the stuff like it’s nothing, the bastard. DO NOT COMPARE. Pup will let you know when to press on. How?? Well you will notice not as much control is needed to make pup sit or what ever else your working on seems much easier one day.
Lets say pup ignores sit and bolts out of the create. Little helpful hint always have the bedroom door or back door shut. Take pup back by the scruff of the neck or collar and put them back to where they bolted from and firmly say sit and make them stay there for a bit and think about it. DO NOT LET THEM JUST STAY OUT. Do same for a break (Bolt) to eat.
If you are patient and allow the pup to grow in this long friendship, you will see that you will both become a team.
SIT
When the pup is ready for formal sit training you need to remember that the pup starts all over again in there minds

North Texas Dog Trainers
alt="North Texas Retriever Trainers dog and owner"
I’m always asked what number do I put the collar on when the dog is not listening or while doing drills? No one can answer that question that is not there looking at the dog or knows that dog. It is all different, the levels change constantly on the training collar. You have the two groups of people the 1-2 and the 4-5 on the levels. Some people are real happy to just say my dog only takes a 2 to listen, but in the same breath say I wish ( This link may also help http://northtexasdogtrainers-duckhunts.blogspot.com/2016/03/north-texas-dog-trainers_8.html )  he would come back when called all the time or not jump up on people. The owner just nicks on the one’s or two’s that the dog just doesn’t seem to pay attention to anymore. Or on the other end of the scale the dog finds out that there is nothing the owner can do, the dogs used to high settings. The proper way is to use the low and high settings. The dog never knows one setting from another. The carry over from the high will carry over to the low settings and visa versa. For example if you nick on a 4 setting and say “here” the dog will have the same reaction to a number 2 nick it had on that 4 setting. It will carry over to when there is no training collar on the dog. You will see a marked differences if you collar condition the dog this way. Now I do not need to here from the amish ( no pressure) trainers there is more ways to train than there are trainers. My way is just the way I learned. I have used no pressure and I have retrained non pressure dogs. It all depends on the way a person learned to do it. Clickers, treats and sweet talk do not work on high powered working dogs. I personally can not throw a treat 300 yds away or have time to look for my cricket.
North Texas Dog Trainers|North Texas Retriever Trainers
Becoming a team
alt="North Texas Retriever Trainers dog with ducks"

Many owners who are learning the obedience commands along with the pup, do not realize that they need to motivate the young pup. This can be as simple as talking to taping their leg. This helps keep the pup interested and keeps the momentum flowing.
The new handler tends to not move and expects the young pup to be a robot. This is a common mistake that needs to be addressed. The pup will flow more with the command with a movement of the handler's body. The pup is trained to follow the handler whether healing or left or right. The new handler must keep this rhythm as if in a dance. The pup will move with and create a team effort (watch this clip  https://youtu.be/m9S2eonXbtgwith the person in control. If this is carried through the training you can move a pup from a very long distance if a gun dog. The pup will correct itself to complete the command if a little off on the given command. If the dog is coming up short on a here command you can just take a step or steps backward to pull the pup to you. In short your body talks to the pup. You move they move, your left leg speaks volumes. The left leg makes the pup heel, move left ,right and forward. If you and the pup are a team you will be in total rhythm as you move.
The Command Shouter.
Many new handlers do not realize that you can have the pup react to many verbal non command words and sounds. You can have a pup bolt to you with the magic word “GOOD DOG” “HEY HEY“. There is more to training than spewing out nothing but strict commands. You can wear out these commands and have a selective hearing pup. If the pup is worn out on commands you have nothing to fall back on. You must have some why to get the point across without harsh pressure at that age. Saying good dog will have the dog spin back to you after a bumper pick up in a pinch and ease the worry of hearing a formal command. The smart trainer will throw happy bumpers while saying hup hup or hey hey hup hup. Whenever the pup hears you say these words if you have made them crazy for the bumper and made things fun etc. they will spin and look and or spin bolt back to you. You must remember you are teaching a habit to conform to the commands. The trainer must be patient and not rush the young pup or you could just break the bond of trainer and work.

Intro to Gun Fire

When I introduce a pup to the gun I throw 3-4 happy birds to get the pup all wound up..crazy for the bird. Then I have a helper with the gun stand about 60 yds away from the pup and I. I have a bear hug around the pup while the bird is ready to be thrown (I DO NOT STEADY PUP!!!) He yells "HUP HUP HUP" which the pup has heard MANY times as a cue for a thrown bird. The shooter shoots once at the top arc of throw. If all goes well the pup will bolt after the bird with no problems. If the pup shows any signs of discomfort it is stopped at once.
alt="North Texas Retriever Trainers dog in boat"

North Texas Dog Trainers
Introducing The Pup To Heel On Leash.. Heel is left and backwards Here is Forward and to the right.

We will be using the choke chain. I do not use the pinch collar. I use the pop and release method with the chain. This is a slight hand movement backwards on heel. Of course with the wilder pup you will have to use much more movement backwards. It is actually the sound of the chain not the supposed "Choke". If you do this right you never have the dog struggling and choking.

In this clip Tabasco in being introduced to heel...(And bird) Notice how I try to just pop and release leash and chain straight back for heel and forward for here.

North Texas Duck Hunting
North Texas Duck Hunts
http://northtexasduckhunts.com/
North Texas Duck Hunting can be a challenge on public land. The areas have become crowded and many hunters in the north Texas duck hunting areas are not always good sportsman. Many of the new hunters are down right jerks. They do not really understand the true meaning of hunting. To some it's all about putting their pictures on social media. North Texas Duck Hunting in my day was not a bunch of people driving surface drive boats all over the marsh running off all the birds they are looking to hunt. Most north texas duck hunters are great but it's the few that make it a pain to do anything in the public hunting areas. North Texas duck hunting has also taken a turn for the worse for the pressure that is put on the birds in public areas. There needs to be days off from hunting. A ban on surface drive motors would increase the quality of the public hunting areas. If not a total ban a HP limit to 9hp no mods allowed. The WMA's need to be closed after 12 and gates locked until 4:30 in the morning. If this would be enforced we may see the North Texas duck hunting quality come back.
These numbers have not been seen o this lake for 7 yrs. This clip was taken while sitting still or walking in shallow water for about 3 hrs. You can hear no shooting even though it was a weekday in season..Nobody was out there in the week back then now there is a min of 10 boats on the water EVERY WEEKDAY and min of 20-30 on (We're only talking about more than 2000 huntable surface water acres)   weekends. That is why the birds have left or feed at night!!!
North Texas Retriever Trainers
At North Texas Dog Trainers I take the pups in training to areas that teach them how to use their noses. They learn to hunt http://northtexasdogtrainers.com/ for the birds, not just always needing to be handled North Texas retriever trainers ask where is the best areas or where are the training areas.
